The Dorset Area is a county on the English Channel coast that lies in the South West of England. Covering 2653 square kilometres, this ceremonial county, otherwise archaically named Dorsetshire borders Somerset to its Northwest side, Devon to its Southern side, Hampshire on the Eastern side and to the North-East, Wiltshire. Dorchester that lies on the southern side of the county is the main town.
The county is largely rural. As such there are only but a few cultural institutions as compared to other areas that are more densely populated. However, the ones available are marvelous. Bournemouth Symphony Orchestra that was founded back in 1983 is one such noticeable cultural institution. The orchestra, on an annual basis, performs more than 130 concerts across the southern region of England. Other major venues available in the Dorset Area include the Pavilion Theatre, the O2 Academy, Poole’s Lighthouse art center, and the Bournemouth’s BIC.
There are, also, a number of events, fairs, and festivals that prove that the Dorset Area is truly a cultural hub. Some of the events hosted in this lovely county include the Great Dorset Steam Fair, which is among the largest events in the entire of the European continent, the free to air show called The Bournemouth Air Festival, and The Spirit of the Sea maritime festival held in Portland and Weymouth that features local entertainers, various cultural and sporting activities. The Dorset County Show is, also, on the list. This show was held for the first time in 1843. The purpose of this two-day cultural event is to celebrate the agriculture of the Dorset Area.
Perhaps an addition to the Dorset Area’s heritage is the Bournemouth Football Club. This professional football club is a member of the English premier league; the highest division in the football league system, and one of the most famous and most loved football league worldwide.
Dorset Area is not, at all, left out when it comes to their signature cuisine and dishes. The Dorset Cuisine is made up of simple dishes sourced originally from the county itself. The majority of these dishes date back to the 17th and the 18th centuries although some recipes are from an earlier time. The dishes mainly comprise of seafood and fish, bread and much of farm produce since the area has thrived in the agricultural sector for centuries.
A number of attractions can be found in Dorsetshire. The Jurassic Coast is one of the many. This is a World Heritage Site that stretches for about 254 kilometres from Exmouth to the East of Devon to Studland, Dorset. This attraction, basing on geological findings, span up to 185 million years. Along the Jurassic Coast, you will see various pinnacles, arches, and rock stalks. The rock types found are numerous, each with their own flora and fauna. Other signature attractions in the area include Durdle Door, Chesil Beach, Old Harry Rocks, the Golden Cap, Isle of Portland, Isle of Purbeck, and South West Coast Path, among many other signature attractions unique to the Dorset Area.
